Stewardship 2018

Pledging FAQs

What is an appropriate pledge?

The amount of your pledge is between you and God and will obviously be affected by your income (see Proportional Giving table below). Because we have very specific and urgent needs in 2018 (outlined here), we are looking for an overall 20% increase in pledged revenue over last year. Many parishioners are tithing (10% of income), giving sacrificially or on a fixed income and are unable to increase their pledge, so those of us who are able are asked to step up and raise our pledges by more than 20%.

I understand St. Matthew’s prefers that I make a pledge rather than putting money in the plate each Sunday – why?

Pledges are preferred to random giving because they represent predictable income. We can count on the total dollar amount parishioners have committed to give when budgeting for 2018. Typically, pledges represent at least 80% of St. Matthew’s income.

How much does St. Matthew’s receive from the Episcopal Church?

Nothing. In fact, we pay ‘Mission Share’, over 12% of our budget, to the Diocese of Los Angeles every year.

My income varies, so how do I calculate how much to pledge?

A pledge is your commitment to be in support of your church. If your income is not always predictable, a pledge is an indication that there is a minimum amount you would like to commit. If your income turns out to be higher than expected, feel free to increase the amount you give to St. Matthew’s.

What is Proportional Giving?

Proportional giving involves setting aside a tithe (10%) or other portion of your income to the work of St. Matthew’s as one of your highest priorities. Amounts below Annual Income are monthly giving; e.g. $80,000 income giving at 4% = $267 a month.

Annual Income $40,000 $60,000 $80,000 $100,000 $150,000 $200,000 $250,000 $300,000
2% $67 $100 $133 $167 $250 $333 $417 $500
4% $133 $200 $267 $333 $500 $667 $833 $1000
6% $200 $300 $400 $500 $750 $1000 $1,250 $1,500
8% $267 $400 $533 $667 $1000 $1,333 $1,667 $2,000
10% $333 $500 $667 $833 $1,250 $1,667 $2,083 $2,500

How do I make a pledge?

You can complete the pledge card you received with the Stewardship Brochure, mail it to St. Matthew’s, or drop it in the offertory plate. Or, if you prefer you can pledge online.

What payment methods does St. Matthew’s accept?

We welcome cash, checks, credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, and Discover), or gifts of appreciated stock. Many parishioners use their banks’ online bill pay service, which sends us a bank draft every month.
